Here are some tips for injecting a GLP-1:5
- Wash your hands with soap and water before giving the injection
- Check the name and label of the injectable pen to ensure that it contains the correct injection (especially important if you take many medications)
- Always use a new needle that is not bent nor damaged for each injection – do not reuse or share your needles with other people
- Carefully follow the instructions in the patient information leaflet that can be found inside the medication box (as different medications and pens may have slightly different instructions on how to use them)
- Choose your injection site and wipe the skin with an alcohol swab, letting the injection site dry before you inject your dose
- Insert the needle into your skin as your doctor has shown you
- Press and hold down the dose button until the full dose has been injected; keep the needle in your skin for a few seconds after this
- Remove the needle from your skin, and if blood appears at the injection site, press lightly with a gauze pad or cotton ball – do not rub the area
- Dispose of the needle in a sharps disposal container right away – do not throw it in a general waste bin
Caring for your GLP-1 pen5
- Store the pen as instructed by your doctor
- Do not drop the pen or knock it against hard surfaces
- Do not try to repair the pen or take it apart
- Do not try to refill the pen, simply dispose of it properly once it’s empty
- Do not expose the pen to dust, dirt or liquid
- Do not wash, soak or lubricate the pen; if needed, it can be wiped with mild detergent on a moist cloth
Choosing an injection site
The best places to give the injection are the front of your thighs, the front of your waist (abdomen) or your upper arm.5,6 Rotate sites for each injection to prevent the build-up of fatty tissue under the skin, known as lipohypertrophy.6
